5 questions to ask a mechanic

When it comes to servicing your car you put your trust in the hands of the mechanic. When something is wrong it’s their job to explain what needs to be done and importantly how much it will cost you. There is nothing wrong with being thorough and so below are 5 important questions to ask your mechanic.

Will I be charged for the initial diagnosis?

In most cases the mechanic should always consult you in regard to the problem. How long it will take to fix and what the cost will be. They shouldn’t really start any work on your car without your say so.

Will any new parts come with a warranty?

Any work that is carried out should come with a warranty that it will last the day to day rigors of travel. This is certainly the case when new parts have to be fitted. Make sure you receive a guarantee so that if anything should happen in the weeks after, you’ll be covered to have it checked and fixed at no extra cost.

Are there other options for the repair?

You don’t necessarily have to go with the first option the mechanic suggests. There might be a cheaper alternative. For example, a replacement tyre doesn’t have to be a top of the range tyre there are cheaper options which work just as well. So always ask for an alternative repair option.

Are there any other mechanical issues I should be aware of?

Sometimes one problem can have a knock on effect of another if it is not checked. It’s always a good idea to make sure there are no other problems which might arise later.

Can I have written confirmation of the work to be carried out?

This will give you a detailed list of the work that needs to be carried out along with the estimated cost. It will also act as cover should anything need to be disputed once the final bill has been issued.
